Syagrus picrophylla belongs to the Arecaceae family. Its propagation is made by seeds; however there is a lack of information in the literature about its seed germination. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of temperature and scarification on the germination of S. picrophylla seeds. The experiment was carried out at the State University of São Paulo, Jaboticabal Campus, Brazil. The experimental design was entirely randomized in a factorial arrangement 5 x 2 (five temperature conditions combined with or without mechanical scarification. The number of germinated seeds that showed primary root protrusion was noted daily, and when the germination was stabilized, the germination (%G) and germination rate (GR) were calculated. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out for means comparing by the Tukey test at 5% confidence level. It was concluded that the greatest %G were obtained at 20-30 degrees C (62%) and 25-35 degrees C (59%) alternated temperatures; %G and GR were similar for both scarified and non-scarified seeds, and there was a faster germination at 20-30 degrees C alternated temperature.

Dypsis leptocheilos is highly valued as an ornamental palm. Its propagation is done by seeds; however, there is little information about this process. The objective of this work was to study the substrate and temperature effects on the germination of D. leptocheilos seeds. The experiments were carried out at FCAV/UNESP, Campus of Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. In order to study the substrate effects, four treatments were arranged (coconut fiber, sand, vermiculite and Plantmax (R)) at 30 degrees C. For the temperature effects, six treatments were performed (temperature at laboratory conditions (21.5 degrees C and 72% RU), 25 degrees C, 30 degrees C, 35 degrees C, 20-30 degrees C and 25-35 degrees C), having the coconut fiber as the substrate. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates of 25 disseminules per plot (seeds with attached endocarp). Water replacement was managed to maintain 100% of the retention capacity of the substrates. The germination tests were observed every two days, and conducted over 148 days for the substrate effects, and over 152 days for the temperature effects, when no more seed germination was noted. In order to determine the germination percentage (% G) and the Germination Speed Index (GSI), the seed was considered germinated when the germinative button appeared. At the end of the experiments, leaf area (cm(2)), root and shoot length (cm), root and shoot dry mass (g) were also obtained. Statistical analysis was performed and means were compared by the Tukey test. Germination rate and speed in coconut fiber was higher at 25 and 30 degrees C. However, when other substrates were tested at 30 degrees C, the highest germination percentage was observed in vermiculite, which also sustained better results for the seed germination and for the characteristics related to shoots and roots.

Dypsis leptocheilos (Hodel) Beentje & J. Dransf. palms are widely used in landscaping, however there is a lack of studies about its biology, especially on the morphology of its seedling disseminules and the ideal seed storage time without loss of viability. The objectives of this work were to describe the morphological aspects and to study the storage effect on the germination of D. leptocheilos seeds. The experiments were performed at FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus, São Paulo State, Brazil. In order to obtain a morphology description 100 disseminules were sowed in vermiculite. The external and internal sides of the disseminules as well as the representative phases of the germination process were sketched with the help of a light chamber attached to a stereomicroscope. Five treatments were arranged in order to study the storage effects on the seeds (four months of storage and straight after harvest), with four replicates with 25 disseminules each (seeds with attached endocarp) in a completely randomized design. The germination test was conducted over a 140 days period and noted every two days. In order to calculate the germination percentage (% G) and the Germination Speed Index (GSI), the seeds were considered germinated when the germinative button appeared. The data were submitted to a polynomial regression analysis to verify the behavior of the variables over the storage period. The D. leptocheilos seeds have rounded shape, ruminate endosperm and hard consistency. The embryo is lateral, peripheral and relatively undifferentiated, with approximately 3 mm long and conical shape. The germination percentage increased from 17% for seeds sowed straight after harvest to 73% for those stored over a three-month period. For the GSI the increase was about 0.85%. It was concluded that the germination of D. leptocheilos is of an adjacent ligulate type. Furthermore, the seeds stored for 3 months at 14 degrees C showed both higher percentage and germination speed.

This work aimed to establish the importance of maturation and ripeness stages and the use of refrigeration for the conservation of 'Paluma' guavas. Fruit picked at the mature-green and ripe stages were stored at ambient conditions (21 degrees C and 85% RH) and also at 10 degrees C (85% RH). The fruit were evaluated every 2 or 3 days for weight loss, appearance, decay, color, firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, total polyphenols extractable content and total antioxidant activity. The fruit stored at 21 degrees C had higher weight loss than those stored at 10 degrees C. Mature-green guavas at 21 degrees C remained in good quality for 6 days, but at 10 degrees C, the preservation period increased to 15 days. Ripe fruit were preserved for 4 days at 21 degrees C, which was extended with refrigeration to 6 days. Mature-green fruit at 21 degrees C had decay in 6 days; while at 10 degrees C decay happened in 18 days. The peel color of mature-green fruits, at 21 degrees C, showed increasing values of luminosity, indicating that its color became lighter (change from green to yellow) and at 10 degrees C it showed constant values until the end of storage. Pulp firmness of mature-green fruit declined during storage as a result of ripening. In ripe fruits such reduction occurred more slowly, since they were softer. The color of the pulp became intense red for mature fruits. Soluble solids were lower in ripe fruit at 21 degrees C, while in mature fruits at 10 degrees C, it increased. The titratable acidity increased in fruits stored at 10 degrees C. The fruits kept at 21 degrees C and the mature guavas kept at 10 degrees C showed no changes in ascorbic acid content. The ripe fruit at 10 degrees C maintained their ascorbic acid levels. Mature guavas, stored at 10 degrees C, had the longest shelf life and higher contents of soluble solids and titratable acidity, with no changes in total polyphenols extractable content and total antioxidant activity.

This study aimed to evaluate the postharvest conservation of tangerines 'Fremont', 'Satsuma Okitsu' and 'Ponkan' when stored at different conditions, as well as the quality of the minimally processed product. Fruit were harvested when a sugar: acid ratio of 10.0 to 12.0 for 'S. Okitsu' and 'Fremont' and 16.0 to 19.0 for 'Ponkan' was reached, selected for uniformity of color, size, and absence of injuries. Whole fruits were stored at 3 degrees C, 85% RH and 7 degrees C, 95% RH, and after each storage period, fruits were brought to ambient conditions (22 degrees C, 65% RH) for 3 days before evaluation. The minimally processed products (peeled) were packed in polystyrene trays (22.4x14.8x3.7 cm) coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) stretchable, with 0.014 mm thickness, and in lidded packages (500 ml) of transparent polyethylene terephthalate. Fruit were analyzed for appearance, weight loss, respiratory rate, package atmosphere, rind and pulp color, soluble solids, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid content. Shelf life of tangerine 'Fremont' was limited to 42 days based on freshness. Its minimally processed product had a 9 day shelf-life for products packaged in PVC film. The mandarins 'S. Okitsu' had 35 days shelf-life at 7 degrees C, which was reduced to 28 days at 3 degrees C. Its fresh-cut product had a shelf-life of 15 days, stored in PVC or PET. 'Ponkan' fruit stored at 3 degrees C had a shelf life of 35 days, which was reduced to 28 days at 7 degrees C. When minimally processed, its shelf-life lasted for 15 days, whether packaged in PVC or PET. The 'Ponkan' had a shelf-life of 35 days at 3 degrees C and 28 days at 7 degrees C, also limited by loss of freshness. When minimally processed and stored in PVC or PET, its shelf life reached 15 days.

Fruit of 'Satsuma Okitsu' tangerine are similar to 'Ponkan', with a maturation period starting in January, and supplying the Brazilian market during the off-season. Fruits of this cultivar have to be harvested with green peel, which is not well accepted by the market. This study aimed to evaluate the degreening of 'Satsuma Okitsu' tangerine using ethephon (2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid). The fruits were harvested with stems when they reached soluble solids: acidity ratio of >7. After selection, the fruits were treated with the Imazalil fungicide (200 ml 100 L-1) for two min and after 24 hours fruits were dipped in different concentrations of ethephon (Ethrel 240): control, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm. The fruits were analyzed every 3 days during 9 days of storage at 18 +/- 2 degrees C, 85 +/- 5% RH for appearance, weight loss, rind color, soluble solids, acidity and ascorbic acid content. The experiment was conducted as a factorial in a completely randomized design. The treatment with Ethrel provided the best flavedo or rind degreening which made these fruits turn orange with greater intensity and showed good quality during 9 days at 18 degrees C, besides increase in weight loss.

The combinations of temperature and time which can cause chilling injuries in avocados 'Geada', 'Quintal' and 'Fortuna' were determined. The binomial 4 degrees C/ 28 days was selected to determine the activity of peroxidase (POD), polyphenoloxidase (PPO), polygalacturonase (PG) and methylesterase pectin (PME). The respiratory activity was also evaluated. The fruits were stored at this condition until being transferred to ambient conditions (22 degrees C and 77% RH) until maturity, when they were compared to fruits stored permanently at this environment, after being cleaned (control). In the second part of this work, different hydrothermal treatments were tested to prevent or minimize chilling injuries. Avocados 'Geada', 'Quintal' and 'Fortuna' were treated at 38 degrees C for 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes before storage at 4 degrees C for 28 days. It was observed that the activity of enzymes associated to browning, POD and PPO, and to maturation, PG and PME, had become greater in fruits stored at 4 degrees C, or when they were transferred to environmental conditions. Fruits subjected to refrigeration, after transferred to environment, presented lower respiratory peak intensity and it occurred earlier than the others. Treatments using 38 degrees C for 60 and 90 min minimized the symptoms of chilling injury in avocados 'Geada' while for 'Quintal' the most efficient was 38 degrees C for 60 min. In 'Fortuna' these treatments did not minimize the damage by cold.

Realizou-se este experimento com o objetivo de avaliar a resposta dos porta-enxertos de videira IAC 313 Tropical e IAC 572 Jales a diferentes níveis de alumínio em solução nutritiva. A condução do experimento foi realizada em condições de casa-de-vegetação do Departamento de Produção Vegetal/Área de Horticultura, da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas - UNESP/Botucatu. Utilizaram-se cinco níveis de alumínio, a saber: 0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 mg L-1. Após a aplicação dos tratamentos, realizaram-se coletas a cada 15 dias para obtenção das variáveis fisiológicas. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de parcelas subdivididas, inteiramente casualizado e com 3 repetições. Avaliaram-se as variáveis: taxa de crescimento absoluto e relativo, razão de massa foliar e relação parte aérea/raízes. Concluiu-se que o porta-enxerto IAC 572 Jales, quando submetido ao nível de 10mg Al L-1 na solução, apresentou maior taxa de crescimento absoluto e relativo, e maior redistribuição de massa seca das folhas para o restante da planta, ao passo que o porta-enxerto IAC 313 Tropical, quando submetido a esse nível de alumínio, apresentou um decréscimo acentuado nessas variáveis.

A disponibilidade de informações relativas à oferta, preços e sazonalidade do abacaxi é um fator de interesse tanto para produtores quanto para atacadistas, pois podem contribuir para melhor planejamento da época de colheita e comercialização. Dessa maneira, o presente trabalho buscou conhecer a sazonalidade do preço e da quantidade do abacaxi comercializado na CEAGESP - SP, no período de setembro de 2005 a março de 2006. Foram obtidos através de entrevistas aos atacadistas, dados referentes à origem de cada cultivar em estudo, o preço pago ao produtor, o preço de venda praticado pelos atacadistas e a quantidade de frutos recebida no dia. Com o objetivo de compreender o processo de comercialização das cultivares de abacaxi 'Smooth Cayenne' e 'Pérola', foram aplicados questionários aos vendedores de três empresas atacadistas. Através das informações obtidas, sugere-se aos produtores de abacaxi 'Smooth Cayenne' o escalonamento da produção no período de novembro a fevereiro, preferencialmente de maneira associativista. Os três atacadistas de abacaxi entrevistados vislumbram uma estabilidade na quantidade comercializada de abacaxi na CEAGESP, com previsão de crescimento para a cultivar 'Pérola' e redução para a cultivar 'Smooth Cayenne'. No período de 12 de setembro de 2005 a 20 de março de 2006, observou-se uma estabilidade de preços pagos ao produtor para ambas as cultivares, com elevação de preços entre os dias 23 de janeiro a 06 de março de 2006 para a cultivar 'Pérola' e entre os dias 06 de fevereiro a 06 de março de 2006 para a cultivar 'Smooth Cayenne'. Os atacadistas consideram a cultivar 'Smooth Cayenne' mais valorizada nos meses de novembro a janeiro e a cultivar 'Pérola' de março a junho e de novembro a dezembro. Pelo cenário de estabilização do mercado de abacaxi, torna-se fundamental a garantia de sabor monitorada pelas associações de produtores em parceria com o Centro de Qualidade em Horticultura (CQH - CEAGESP) e atacadistas, com destaque para a cultivar 'Smooth Cayenne'.

Grafting is an alternative technique often recommended for cucumber culture in protected environments. This study aimed to study yield of cucumber grafted on different rootstocks compared to non-grafted plants in non-infected soil. Five treatments (Japanese cucumber hybrid 'Tsuyataro' without grafting, grafted on squash hybrids 'Shelper', 'Excitte Ikki', 'Daiguy' and 'Keiji') were evaluated in a completely randomized blocks design, with four repetitions and six plants per plot. Lesser fruit yield was obtained in cucumber grafted on 'Keiji', while cucumber grafted on other rootstocks did not differ from non-grafted plants. So, in the absence of soil borne diseases, grafting did not increase cucumber fruit yield, and, depending on rootstock, grafting can decrease production compared with non grafted plants.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar se o horário de colheita da erva-cidreira brasileira [Lippia alba (Mill.) N. E. Br.], fenotipo carvona-limoneno, tem influência sobre a produção de massa foliar, rendimento e composição do óleo essencial. Foram avaliados cinco horários de colheita quando a cultura estava com 145 dias desde o transplante: 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 e 16:00 h com cinco repetições, distribuídos em blocos casualizados. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental Lageado da FCA-UNESP/Botucatu no Setor de Horticultura do Departamento de Produção Vegetal. A colheita foi realizada a 15 cm da superfície do solo e o óleo essencial obtido através de hidrodestilação, em aparelho tipo Clevenger. Levou-se em consideração os fatores agronômicos e o rendimento obtido por hidrodestilação. O óleo essencial foi analisado em cromatógrafo gasoso acoplado a espectrômetro de massas (CG/EM). Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância (Teste F) e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey. Não houve diferença estatística para produção de massa foliar, teor de óleo essencial e produtividade de óleo essencial em massa fresca e seca. No entanto, entre os compostos majoritários do óleo essencial das folhas, carvona e limoneno, a melhor produtividade de carvona foi obtida às 10:00 h, em matéria fresca (2,050 L ha-1) e em matéria seca (2,068 L ha-1), e para o limoneno às 16:00 h, em matéria fresca (1,068 L ha-1) e em matéria seca (1,060 L ha-1).

A pitaya é uma cactácea originária das florestas tropicais americanas que produz frutos exóticos bem apreciados e comercializados, principalmente no continente asiático. Contudo, ainda é uma espécie vegetal que demanda informações técnicas de cultivo nas áreas agrícolas brasileiras, motivando pesquisas em várias áreas do conhecimento. Objetivou-se avaliar diferentes substratos no enraizamento de cladódios imersos e não imersos no regulador de crescimento, ácido naftalenacético (ANA), na formação e desenvolvimento inicial de raízes em estacas de Hylocereus undatus, resultando em mudas mais vigorosas e de melhor qualidade. O experimento foi conduzido sob ripado no Departamento de Produção Vegetal - setor de Horticultura da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas no campus de Botucatu - UNESP. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente aleatorizado em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 (substratos x condições) com quatro repetições. Após 60 dias da instalação do experimento foram avaliados: massa fresca e seca da parte aérea, massa fresca e seca das raízes e o comprimento da maior raiz. O crescimento e desenvolvimento radicular inicial de mudas não são influenciados pelo regulador vegetal ANA. Os substratos com a presença de areia são os mais adequados para a formação de mudas vigorosas e de boa qualidade. A mistura areia + esterco bovino proporciona maior acúmulo de fitomassa no sistema radicular de pitaya (H. undatus).
